AT: Science the Rat plush by brokensymphony AT: Science the Rat plush by brokensymphony
Science the Rat, Princess Bubblegum's pet, as depicted in the Adventure Time episode "From Bad to Worse". She stands on her own and has posable legs and tail. I have no idea why it didn't occur to me at the time to make her a medal; I should get on that...

This plush is "as seen on the Frederator blog" now, too. :3 (Actually, I'm not sure if anyone else who isn't affiliated with the production has been on the blog twice? o.o)

Materials: anti-pill fleece, Minky, stretch knit, wire, safety eyes
Size: err... about 12" without her tail

I've been trying to make this, but I keep failing at making the body. How did you do it??

brokensymphony Featured By Owner Feb 1, 2012  Hobbyist Artisan Crafter
I may explain badly but uh... I wanted to put the seam on the bottom, and not have seams elsewhere. So imagine that you have a triangle, and you tilt it so that one side is straight - > |\ the pattern for the body looks basically like that, with the straight section running along the center of the piece. The upper half of this |\ is the nose end. The tip of the triangle is a separate piece since it's a different color, and it's got a seam roughly like an n.
n
|\
Obviously there's another seam down the middle where the color change is. Once you get that far, you just have to cut your fabric folded (so the straight line isn't a seam, but the angled one is). Then there's a circular piece at the wide end, like the bottom of a cone.

This is probably a terrible explanation, sorry

Minky is the magic. It turns a lot better and sharper than fleece, but it's not as likely to split at the seams like cotton or flannel. Spandex works great for tiny too, but it's much harder to work with.

Does it really??? Hmm that's interesting! I work mostly in fleece and I've totally been wanting to make the switch to minky because it feels so nice and looks so much nicer after a lot of time has passed, but it's so expensive and I'd have to up all my prices and I already just have SO MUCH FLEECE. I have worked with it a few times and the only thing I remember is it being a huge mess haha.

Yeah, Minky's pretty messy. Though I've worked with worse. SO MUCH WORSE. Plusher's lung I call it, hacking on the fuzz :P It's not better for everything, just some stuff; so that's why I usually combine it with fleece. It works great as an accent since then there's another texture.

I can't and don't mass-produce her since it's not my character and because she was pretty time-consuming.

But you can always talk to me about commissions via Etsy ;) [link]

Yeah I thought I saw her in the background at one point. Like how so many of the minor characters who weren't even in the first season are in the opening! They're sneaky like that.

And thank you! :)
